THEME
PLANNING FOR RESILIENCY IN THE FACE OF CLIMATE CHANGE
Engineering and design for sustainability are an essential part of a multi-faceted response to climate change particularly in urban centres, which may include increasing our resiliency in the face of extreme weather events, changing our water management practices, or adapting our cities and infrastructure to an unpredictable future. There is a need to identify robust strategies for responding to the challenges brought by climate change through adaptation, reorganization, and evolution. Our response to climate change must include solutions that allow our socio-ecological systems to not only survive, but thrive.
The 5th Annual Trottier Symposium on Sustainable Engineering, Energy, and Design will focus on resilience and human responses to the threats brought on by climate change, while considering the following questions:
- What is resilience and why is it so important to ensure sustainability in the context of urbanization and climate change?
- How can we be more resilient to disruptions such as extreme weather events, floods, drought, sea level rise, and heat waves? What solutions are being imagined, developed, and implemented?
- How can infrastructure be protected and self-renewed following extreme weather events or other stresses exacerbated by climate change?
SPEAKERS
The symposium is a free, public event, featuring prominent speakers over 2 days.

ABOUT
Each year the Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design (TISED) at McGill University and the Institut de l’énergie Trottier (IET) at Polytechnique Montréal take turns hosting this event. Made possible through the generous support of Dr. Lorne Trottier, this is a forum for students, professors, government and industry professionals to connect with the general public on advancements for sustainability through engineering and design. The First Annual Symposium was hosted by McGill University in 2014 on Sustainable Cities and Industries and the Second Annual Symposium was hosted by Polytechnique Montréal in 2015 on Energy in Quebec and Canada: A Conversation Starter and the Third Annual Symposium was once again hosted by McGill University in 2016 on Renewable Energy: What holds us back? What moves us forward?”
The Annual Symposium focuses attention on the relevance of sustainable engineering and design
to peoples’ lives. This series has been made possible by the generous gift from the Lorne Trottier
Family Foundation.
We are proud to announce that the 5th Annual Trottier Annual Symposium on sustainable Engineering, Energy, and Design has been certified as a Bronze McGill Sustainable Event. To achieve this certification, we implemented actions such as reducing event material waste, working with locally based suppliers, and ensuring that our event is accessible by public transit.
